Custom set of weighted checkers/draughts

This is a custom set of checkers. For playing checkers. I think the Brits call it draughts. I suppose I do favor the latter name. Feels more…British.

The pieces are in cherry and walnut. They are 1.5″ in diameter and work nicely on a board with 2.25″ squares.

I drilled out a recess on the bottoms with a forstner bit and glued in 3oz lead fishing weights, and then sealed them in epoxy.

These suckers are heavy and, if needed, could be used in self-defense against intruders. One good shot between the eyes with one of these little numbers and its lights out cat burglar. You go to jail now.

The bottoms are covered in felt so they don’t scratch. We should all be so lucky.

The pieces were finished with a couple coats of shellac. The tops were lacquered with gloss lacquer.

I’ve made a few sets in different woods – cherry, walnut, ash, maple. Whatever is desired.

The box was just what I had on hand at the time. Nothing special. Just some QS white oak with box joints.
