Custom mudroom bench and storage with slate tile floor

- Project: Mudroom bench with shoe cubbies, coat hooks, storage shelf
- Project Category: Custom Built-ins & Cabinetry / Small Projects & Specialty)
- Completion Date (~May 2021)
Project overview
- Brief description: Small custom mudroom storage and seating area, for doffing and donning ones footwear, storing said footwear, hanging one’s cloaks and other assorted outerwear as dicated by seasonal shifts in the ambient temperature and relative humidity.
- Interesting Project Note: I installed the herringbone pattern slate tile floor as part of this project. Never again. An existing ceramic tile floor needed removed first, concrete slab needed grinding, filling, and leveling after. 12″ x 24″ slate tiles were then installed in the aforementioned pattern. My knees still hurt from this project. Ever used a wet saw outside in the dead of winter? Yeah. Not a pleasant experience. But I guess it turned out okay in the end.

- Materials
- Primary wood species: Bench top: Black Walnut; Bench carcass 3/4″ maple ply with maple face frame; modified brick molding “feet” around bottom of dividers; Upper shelf and brackets are pine. Painted pine tongue and groove paneling on wall.
- Finishes used: Bench top: Tried and True Original Polymerized Linseed Oil and Beeswax; Paint: White interior latex (Boring, I know.).
- Construction Methods: Nothing too fancy here. Bench carcass was assembled with glue and pocket screws (gasp!). Top affixed with figure 8’s. Paneling nailed to the wall. Shelf held up by brackets screwed into the studs. Boring. I know.
- Dimensions: Bench is 36″ wide x 18″ deep x 17″ high. The rest is inconsequential. The upper shelf is about the same width. Maybe 78″ from the floor.

- Timeline
- Project duration: Well, the construction and installation only took a couple of days. The flooring, on the other hand, start to finish – well, a lot longer and let’s just leave it at that.
- Notable factors affecting timeline: Tile work is not my speciality. I can do it, but I don’t like it. In particular, floor tile due to the lower extremity punishment one must endure. So probably don’t ask me about that. Hire a specialist for your floor tile needs.
